Don’t Let UV Rays Cause Summertime Blues

Everyone wants to avoid the burn — especially since the long-termeffects could be an even bigger pain. July is UV Safety Month, making it the perfect time to brush up on your sun protection know-how:

Apply early and often. Put on SPF 15 or higher a half-hour before you go outside, using at least 2 ounces to cover any exposed area. Don’t forget ears, scalp, and the back of your neck. Reapply if you swim, sweat, or towel off.

Seek shade. Trees shield about 60% of the sun’s rays. Buildings, porch roofs, and umbrellas can also protect you. As a bonus, you’ll be cooler when you stay out of the direct sun.

Adopt a new dress code. When the mercury climbs, it may be tempting to go as bare as you dare. But clothing provides better protection than sunscreen alone. Hats with brims shield your face and neck, while apparel with a high Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) dramatically reduces exposure.
